Chatchai Puipia’s work is brilliant, skeptical and sarcastic. His tragicomic “Siamese Smile” presents a clueless local artist ‘shoplifting’ from old Western masters. Chatchai mocks Thai traditions that reveal the nation’s spiritual and social crisis. His “Thai Magic Realism” daydream transmits moral messages. He creates spaces for reflection, blending familiar and unfamiliar objects that confront history, nationalism, ancestry, and art itself.
